Overview

Nepal is not only famed for its mountain peaks. Hidden amongst this beautiful country there is also wild jungle where you can enjoy a unique safari experience. Whether you want to walk amongst the rhino, watch the indigenous birds, get down in the water with the crocodile, see the Gangetic dolphin, spot a tiger – or simply enjoy a beautiful park and have elephants grazing in your garden – then we have the trip for you.

Bardia National Park is the largest and most undisturbed wilderness area in Nepal, covering a total area of 968 square kilometers. Established in 1988 near the southern border of the far north-west corner of Nepal, this Terai treasure adjoins the eastern bank of the Karnali River in the Bardiya District.

About 70% of the park is covered with forest, with the balance a mixture of grassland, savannah and riverine forest. The flora recorded in the park comprises 839 different species of plants that pepper the wide range of vegetation, including alluvial and subtropical – both of which provide the perfect habitat for the 642 different species hosted within the park.

No matter what kind of animal lover you are – the national park will have something to satisfy your curiosity. The Karnali-Babai river system and its myriad of lakes are the perfect habitat for the 125 recorded species of fish. However, it’s the mugger crocodiles that truly rule the lakes. Take a canoe and find yourself level with the water’s surface, cruising face to face with the formidable reptiles. Or if you fancy something a little less intimidating, why not go dolphin watching and marvel as the Gangetic dolphin splash past.

The most famous animals to rule this kingdom however are the land mammals. The Bardiya National Park is home to at least 53 mammals including swamp deer, rhinoceroswild elephant and the infamous Bengal tiger. In fact, together with the neighboring Banke National Park, this protected area represents the Tiger Conservation Unit (TCU) – so you can be confident that when you are enjoying your safari you are helping to protect the animals within its kingdom.

Once here we have a wide variety of different activities on offer to suit your individual safari desires. We have jungle walks for those who want to challenge themselves and get up close to the animals, as well as a jeep safari for those that want to relax and take photos as they absorb the wildlife. The park also offers canoeing and boating in the Rivers, an Elephant Breeding Center, a Crocodile Breeding Center, Tharu Museum and of course bird watching, to take in the 407 different bird species for which the park is famed.

If you like the sound of this safari, but were looking for something a bit closer to Kathmandu, why not check out the Chitwan safari that we also have to offer? For more details about either of our jungle safaris, please feel free to contact a member of our friendly team. Or if you would like to read about what it is like to experience the national park then why not take a look at our Bardia national park blog below.
